“Helping Birds Along the Way”
By Kevin Dickey, Conservation Chairman – Lakeland Audubon Society
This Saturday, May 13th is the official day for celebrating International Migratory Bird Day in the United States and Canada. The celebration is overseen by an organization called Environment for the Americas. This organization’s main focus is to bring attention to the transcontinental migration of birds (birds that migrate between two continents, i.e. North and South America). Originally founded by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center and the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, the program was first under the direction of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Along with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. In 2007 Environment for the Americas began to coordinate the program. The International Migratory Bird Day program’s main objective is to bring attention to one of the most critical steps in the life cycle of migratory bird species, which is oftentimes an incredible annual journey between nesting and wintering grounds.
