LANDSCAPING FOR BIRDS

Most birds do not come to feeders, but you can easily attract them to your yard in a variety of other ways. Naturalizing your yard is one of the easiest and most impactful things you can do as an individual to help birds and other wildlife. Birds have evolved interdependent relationships with our native plants and insects and rely on them to provide for their needs year-round and throughout their lives. For this program, we will discuss how to manage your yard to support the primary needs of birds; food, shelter, and nesting, as well as other tips you can implement to attract birds and help them thrive!
Lisa grew up in Chicago and has had a lifelong passion for wild places. She started birding around 10 years ago and it has since become of full blow obsession that she enjoys sharing with others. While watching birds, Lisa became interested in the interconnections between birds, the insects they eat and the plants that supported them both. She is currently Vice President of McHenry County Audubon, does bird surveys for McHenry County Conservation District and Bird Conservation Network, leads bird walks and trips, and participates in other citizen science activities such as Hawkwatch, Spring and Christmas Bird Counts, and Feederwatch. Lisa is currently a mentor for the WPPC’s ‘Natural Garden in your Yard’ program and has spent the last several years turning her property into a birding “hotspot”. Lisa has documented over 130 bird species, as well as a menagerie of insects and other wildlife, in her yard in McHenry County.
